Nurture Your Seed …
He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” Matthew 13:31-32
Two sentences. A simple statement that doesn’t offer any explanation before, or after. Simply, the mustard seed. The smallest of all seeds that, given the right conditions, can grow into the broadest of trees.
This passage talks of the tiny seed that grows into something amazing. I think my relationship with God is like that. It was a tiny little seed that has finally begun to grow.
I grew up in a family that didn’t attend church. I can count on one hand how many times I was actually in church as a child. My seed was still dormant buried deep in the soil.
When my first husband and I began attending church, my seed took this in and began to expand. We attended church where my daughter was baptized and confirmed. However, even she, at her young age, questioned the practices within this particular religious sect. My seed was secure, but couldn’t grow.
Twenty years later I felt that tug on my heart and went searching for a church; a home. I had some great experiences in this journey and my seed opened and began to sprout in the darkness. Now, as I learn so much about the radical love of God, my small sprout in the darkness has finally broken through the soil. I am confident that my seed will continue to grow and is seeking the light that only He provides.
It was the smallest of seeds that will grow into that incredible tree. It will be strong enough to support and share with others the great love that has begun filling me.
That little mustard seed is in all of us; we just need to nurture it. Feed your seed!
