God Is Our Shield
If we look for them, God gives us reminders of his lessons in all sorts of places; particularly when we need them most.
No matter where my faith journey has taken me, I have always tried to remain open to the lessons God is trying to teach me.
The biggest hurdle for me has been the difficulty that comes with letting go of control. For most of my life, if asked, I would have told you that my biggest fear was the unexpected. As I got older, I started to learn and embrace what we all know deep down–I am not in control of the way my life pans out. God, however, is.
This knowledge is something I truly have to embrace in my life right now–as I am due with my second baby in a couple of months. Remembering that God is in control is a lesson for all parents, of course, but, this baby of ours has a heart defect and will need to have surgery when he is very small.
In this situation, there is truly nothing I can do to control it. Perhaps more than ever in my life, I have to sit back and trust God.
So, it’s no mistake that the story of Abraham was presented to me today.
In the most trying of times, Abraham trusted God completely and followed his plan. I mean, he–without question–took his only son to be sacrificed based on God’s word to him. And, for his unwavering faith and obedience, Abraham was rewarded greatly, not just with his son being spared as a sacrifice and able to live a full life, but by becoming the father of nations.
“…the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward.” Genesis 15:1
When faced with difficulty, Abraham didn’t try to control his fate, he only turned to God and trusted Him to be his shield.
“And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” Genesis 15:6
As God said to Abraham, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (Genesis 18:14). When we truly look at the big picture, we know the answer to his one without a doubt.
So, I bring the story of Abraham with me into my daily life, and into the times ahead that require my strength as a mom perhaps more than ever before. I remind myself that God has a plan for all of us and believe without hesitation that God is my shield. God is our shield, if we let go of control and allow Him to be.
